How to find Wi-Fi dead zones in your house

A dead zone is rarely the whole house. It's a room, a corner or a floor. Here's how to find exactly where your Wi-Fi gives up, and why.

A Wi-Fi dead zone is a spot in your home where the connection is so weak that pages stall, calls freeze or the phone drops off the network entirely. Most homes don't have a "bad Wi-Fi" problem everywhere: they have one or two rooms where the signal gives up. Finding those rooms precisely is the first step, because every fix depends on where the problem is.

What counts as a dead zone

It helps to separate three situations that feel similar:

  • Dead zone: your device loses the network or can barely load anything.
  • Weak spot: you're connected, but video buffers and calls stutter.
  • Slow internet everywhere: even next to the router things are slow. That's usually your internet plan or provider, not your Wi-Fi coverage.

If it's slow everywhere, a coverage map won't show much. If it's fine in some rooms and bad in others, you're dealing with coverage, and you can fix it.

Why dead zones happen

Wi-Fi is a radio signal. It gets weaker with distance and loses strength every time it passes through something. The usual suspects:

  • Distance from the router. Signal strength falls quickly as you move away.
  • Walls and floors. Drywall and wood cost little. Brick, stone and concrete cost a lot. A concrete floor between levels is one of the most common causes of a "dead" upstairs or basement.
  • Metal. Fridges, radiators, metal doors, mirrors with a metal backing and foil-lined insulation reflect and block the signal.
  • Water. Aquariums, water heaters and even a crowd of people absorb Wi-Fi, especially on the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Interference. Microwave ovens, some baby monitors and dozens of neighboring networks compete on the same channels.
  • A badly placed router. A router on the floor, inside a cabinet or behind the TV starts at a disadvantage in every direction.

How to find dead zones: the walk test

You don't need special equipment to get a first picture.

  1. Pick one device and stick with it. Phones differ a lot in how well they receive, so switching devices mid-test ruins the comparison.
  2. Start next to the router. Note how quickly a video starts, or run a quick speed test. This is your best case.
  3. Walk room by room. Stop where you actually use the internet: the desk, the sofa, the bed, the kitchen table.
  4. Test the same thing in every spot. Load the same video, or run the same speed test, and write down the result.
  5. Check the in-between areas too. Hallways and stairs often reveal where the signal starts to collapse.

This works, but it has limits. You end up with a list of numbers and no picture, and it's easy to miss a corner or confuse rooms after a few minutes.

Turn the walk test into a map

Reading what you find

Once you know where the weak spots are, look at what sits between them and the router:

How to fix a dead zone

Try the free fixes first, in this order, and re-test after each one:

  2. Get obstacles out of the way. Take the router out of the cabinet and away from the TV, the microwave and metal furniture.
  3. Restart and update the router. Firmware updates often improve stability and range.
  4. Use the right band. 2.4 GHz reaches further through walls, 5 GHz is faster but shorter-range. Most routers pick automatically, but a room far away may do better on 2.4 GHz.

Can a phone detect Wi-Fi dead zones?

Yes. Your phone is the device that suffers in the dead zone, so it's a good way to find it. The simplest method is a walk test, and a heatmap app turns that walk into a map so you can see the weak spots at a glance.

Is a dead zone the same as slow internet?

No. Slow internet affects every room, including the one with the router. A dead zone is local: the connection is fine in some places and fails in others.

Do Wi-Fi booster apps fix dead zones?

No. An app can't make a radio signal stronger. What apps can do is help you find where the signal is weak, so you change the right thing: router position, band or extra hardware.

Why did a room become a dead zone when it used to be fine?

Something changed between that room and the router: new furniture, a moved router, a new appliance, or simply more neighboring networks competing on the same channel. Re-mapping the home usually shows what shifted.
