How many mesh nodes do you really need?
Most homes need fewer nodes than the box suggests, and adding more can make things worse. How to decide from your own home, not from square meters.

Mesh kits are sold in packs of two or three, and the boxes promise a coverage area in square meters. Your home doesn't care about that number. Two apartments of the same size, one open plan and one split by concrete walls, need a completely different setup.
Why the square-meter number misleads
Manufacturers measure coverage in near-ideal conditions. What actually decides how far a node reaches:
- Walls and their material. Drywall costs you little, reinforced concrete can cost you almost everything.
- The shape of the home. A long, narrow apartment is harder to cover than a square one of the same size.
- Floors. Concrete slabs between floors block more than internal walls.
- Where the router has to live, usually where the line enters, often in a corner.
A realistic starting point
- Apartment, up to about 80 m² (850 sq ft), open layout: one good router, often nothing more. Try moving it first.
- Apartment with thick walls, or a long corridor: router plus one node.
- Two-story house: router plus one node upstairs, ideally above or near the stairs.
- Three floors, or a basement, or an outbuilding: router plus two nodes, and seriously consider cable.
Start with the smallest setup that could work. You can always add a node; you can't easily undo a crowded network.
Why more nodes can make Wi-Fi worse
Every wireless node repeats traffic over the air. Unless your system has a dedicated radio for that link or an Ethernet cable between units:
- Throughput drops with each wireless hop. A node talking to another node, which talks to the router, can lose half the speed at each step.
- The nodes compete for airtime with your devices on the same channels.
- Devices get confused when several nodes offer a usable signal in the same place, and cling to the wrong one.
Three nodes badly placed perform worse than two well placed. This is why "I added a node and it got slower" is such a common complaint.
Wired changes everything
If you can connect nodes with Ethernet (or MoCA over TV coax, or powerline), each node is effectively a new router. The speed penalty disappears, and node count becomes a question of coverage only. A wired three-node setup is genuinely better than a wireless one; a wireless three-node setup often isn't better than two.
How to decide for your home
Count the rooms that are actually a problem, not the square meters:
- Map your home as it is now. Walk every room and see where the connection is strong, weak or dead.
- Fix the free things first: router position, height, and the cupboard it's hiding in. Map again. Many homes need zero nodes after this.
- Look at what's left. One weak corner at the end of the house is one node. A weak upper floor is one node upstairs. A weak floor and a weak garden is two.
- After installing, map again. If the new map still has red areas, moving the node usually helps more than adding another.
Signs you have too many
- Speeds are lower than before you added the last node.
- Your phone shows full bars but pages hesitate.
- Devices stay connected to a distant node while standing next to a closer one.
- The app for your mesh system shows a node with a weak connection to the rest of the network.
