Where to put a mesh node or Wi-Fi extender
The most common mistake is putting the second unit in the room with no signal. Here's how to find the spot that actually works, and how to check it.

You bought a mesh system or an extender, and the weak room is still weak. Almost always the problem is placement: the second unit is in the wrong spot. A mesh node or extender can only repeat what it receives, so where it sits decides how well the whole thing works.
The mistake nearly everyone makes
The instinct is to put the new unit in the room with bad Wi-Fi. That's the one place it can't work. If the signal arriving there is already poor, the node rebroadcasts a poor signal: your phone shows more bars, but pages still load slowly.
The unit has to sit where the router's signal is still good, close enough to the weak area to cover it.
The rule: roughly two thirds of the way
Put the node between the router and the weak area, about halfway to two thirds of the way there, in a spot where the router still comes in strong. In practice that usually means:
- Same floor, far end of the house: in the hallway or the room in between, not in the far room itself.
- Upstairs bedroom, router downstairs: at the top of the stairs, or in the room directly above the router. Stairwells are the easiest path for a signal between floors.
- Detached garage or garden office: in the room closest to it, near a window facing it, or better, wired.
Where not to put it
- On the floor, behind a sofa or inside a cabinet. Chest height on a shelf, in the open, is much better.
- Behind a TV, a fridge, a mirror or a metal bookshelf. Metal and water reflect and absorb Wi-Fi.
- Next to the router. Two units a couple of meters apart cover the same area twice and add nothing.
- In the bathroom or the utility room, where tiles, pipes and metal boxes surround it.
- Plugged into an extension lead behind furniture, which is where wall-socket extenders usually end up.
If you can run a cable, run it
A mesh node or access point connected to the router by Ethernet doesn't repeat anything: it creates fresh, full-speed Wi-Fi where you need it, and its placement is then free. If a cable is impossible, MoCA adapters (over TV coax) or powerline adapters (over electrical wiring) can carry the connection instead, with results that depend on your wiring.
This is the single biggest upgrade you can make to a mesh system, and it also lets you put the node in the far room, where a wireless node should never go.
How to find the right spot in your home
Two units, three possible shelves, and no way to tell which one is better by looking. So measure:
- Map your home first, before buying or installing anything. You'll see where the signal is still good and where it falls off. The border between the two is where the node belongs.
- Install the node there and let it settle.
- Map again. If the weak room is still weak, move the node back toward the router, not toward the room.
A cheap test before you commit: take your phone to the spot where you want the node and check the connection there. If it's poor where the node will stand, it will be poor everywhere behind it.
What good placement looks like
- The node receives a strong signal from the router.
- Its coverage overlaps the router's coverage a little, so devices can hand over while walking.
- The weak room falls inside the node's own strong area, not at the edge of it.
- Nothing large and metallic sits between the two units.
