Phone won't switch to the nearest node
You're standing next to the node and your phone is still talking to the router at the other end of the house. Here's why, and what really helps.

You add a second unit, walk into the far bedroom, and your phone hangs on to the router downstairs with one bar. Nothing is broken: this is how Wi-Fi decides, and it's the most common disappointment after a mesh install.
Why it happens: the device chooses, not the network
In Wi-Fi, the client decides which access point to use. Your phone stays connected to whatever it joined until that connection gets bad enough to be worth leaving, because switching costs a short interruption. Engineers call a device that refuses to let go a sticky client.
Two things make it worse:
- Walking away from a node is gradual. By the time your phone admits the signal is poor, you're deep inside the other node's area.
- The old connection still "works". One bar is still a connection, so the phone sees no reason to move.
What actually helps
1. One network name for everything. All units should broadcast the same SSID and password, including the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. If your extender created "MyWiFi_EXT", devices will treat it as a different network and never move between them automatically. This alone fixes many cases.
2. Fix the coverage, not the phone. Devices roam late, so they need the new node's signal to be clearly better where the handover should happen. If the two coverage areas barely touch, you get a stretch of corridor where both are weak and the phone stays put. Move the node so its coverage overlaps the router's a little.
3. Don't overlap too much either. A node too close to the router creates a large area where both are strong, and the phone has no reason to switch at all. Nodes that are too close are as bad as nodes that are too far.
4. Turn on the roaming helpers. Many systems have settings called 802.11k / v / r, "fast roaming", "smart connect", "band steering" or "AP steering". They let the network suggest a better access point instead of waiting for the device to notice. On some routers they are off by default.
5. Lower the main router's transmit power, if the setting exists. Counter-intuitive, but a router shouting across the whole house is exactly what keeps phones attached to it.
6. Update the firmware. Roaming behavior has improved a lot in recent mesh firmware.
Quick fixes that only work once
- Turning Wi-Fi off and on, or toggling airplane mode, forces the phone to pick again, and it will pick the strongest one. Fine as a workaround, useless as a solution.
- "Forget this network" and reconnect while standing next to the node: same story.
- iPhones and Android phones don't let you pin a device to a specific node. Any app claiming otherwise can't do it either.
When the real problem is the layout
If your phone keeps choosing the far unit in a specific spot, that spot is telling you something about your coverage. The reliable way to see it is a map: walk the house, and look at where the quality drops, where the two units meet, and how wide the weak corridor between them is.
